Home Security in New Jersey Steps Up

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Home Security has become a concern in New Jersey. As we have seen throughout the country, the poor economy has provided financial hardship for many Americans. What are people saying?

“I feel exposed to crime now.”
“I feel like I’m putting my family at risk.”
“I want to know that I’m protected.”

While in the past, the typical “snatch and grab” burglar may have been a drug user, many home invasions and burglaries are done by those unemployed and finding it difficult to make ends meet.

Some good news and a solution
The FBI says that a home with a security system is 2 to 3 times less likely to be burglarized. There are expensive systems available, with custom installation offered. But most families need a deterrent to crime. Having some type of alarm system, with signs and window decals visible is a major step towards protection.

Fortunately, there are many quality systems that a home owner can install themselves. High quality, low cost, and easy to install wireless alarm systems can give you a level of protection that you did not have.

Burglaries on the rise in New Jersey

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

According to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting, in New Jersey there were 37, 482 Burglaries in 2007. Compared to 2006, that represents a small decrease. In 2006, burglaries numbered 39,433.

However, anecdotal evidence indicates that with the recession, crime has gone up in 2008. Formerly, many break-ins were so-called “snatch and grab” burglaries. That is to say, a perpetrator, motivated by the need for money to buy drugs, would break in and take what they could. Unfortunately, in the current economic climate, law enforcement officers indicate that many burglaries are committed by people who lost jobs, and are out of work. This creates a situation in that the would be burglar does not look like a strung out dope addict. He or she could be your neighbor.

One of the more poignant episodes occurred in Wyckoff, NJ this April. The home had its door kicked in and every room was ransacked. The home had an alarm system, but it was not activated.
